Sandwiches in the Workplace

Date online: 06/11/2017

It is estimated that about 2.4 million people in the UK are ‘sandwiched’ between caring for family members with disabilities or chronic illnesses and raising children while also working full or part-time. All too often the pressure of being made to feel like the filling in a sandwich leads to mental health issues which impact on an individual’s performance at work and personal wellbeing.

Together with event partner Link4Life, the latest in Molesworths widely acclaimed series of breakfast events tackled the difficult issue of mental health.

Tony Husband, a professional cartoonist who has worked for many leading publications such as Private Eye, The Times, Punch, Playboy, The Sunday Express, The Spectator and The Sun, shared his moving and deeply personal experience of supporting his father who suffered from dementia for many years before he passed away, whilst also looking after his own wife and children, and working full time. Using cartoons from his book “Take Care, Son: The Story of My Dad and his Dementia”, Tony provided a vivid insight into the often sad, sometimes humorous, but always emotionally challenging burden of caring for an ageing parent suffering from dementia.

Pete Yarwood, CEO of Red Rose Recovery, delivered a mesmerising account of how, after 20 years spent in the darkest recesses of Salford’s drug sub-culture and the criminal justice system, he met a stranger who saw potential in him, became his mentor and inspired him to take a part-time job, study for a degree, and then work his way up to become CEO. Pete and his colleagues at Red Rose Recovery are dedicated to helping people who have “fallen out of the nest” by building recovery systems through peer support networks.

Fiona Brigg of Link4Life provided an insight into the range of mental and physical wellbeing support services that she and her colleagues can offer local employees, often at little or no cost.
